The aim of the Venice 2018 Symposium is to focus on the advances made in the application of technologies for energy recovery from biomass and waste and to encourage discussion in these fields.

The production of energy from alternative sources and its impact on climate change are among the main strategic tools implicated in the sustainable development of our society. Numerous types of biomass and wastes contribute towards the production of energy and reduction in the use of fossil fuels by means of biological, chemical and thermal processes. Existing biomass and waste to energy technologies are currently undergoing rapid development. Despite growing interest in the use of these technologies, in many countries their implementation remains limited.
The aim of the Venice 2018 Symposium is to focus on the advances made in the application of technologies for energy recovery from biomass and waste and to encourage discussion in these fields. The previous edition of the Symposium, held in 2016, was attended by over 500 scientists and operators from approximately 57 different countries.
The seventh edition of the Symposium will feature:
Three days of scientific presentations
One day of guided technical tours at biochemical and thermochemical plants
Six parallel oral sessions, poster sessions and an exhibition by companies working in the field
Expected attendance of over 600 delegates from tens of different countries worldwide
The conference will be held in the eminent meeting centre of the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, internationally renowned as one of the most relevant congress venue in Venice. Advantageous conditions will be offered to companies wishing to display their practical experience and innovative technologies. Meeting opportunities will also be created to foster cooperation between those involved in industrial production and material recycling.
The Symposium is organized by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) and Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Venezia, with the scientific support of the Universities of Padova, Hokkaido, Queensland, Rostock, Trento, Tsinghua and Hamburg University of Technology. Venice 2018 Symposium will take place at the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista (Great School of St. John the Evangelist).
The School can be reached with a few minutes’ walk from the railway station and with its central position makes it perfect for visiting Venice during breaks as well as at the end of the day.
The oldest amongst the Great Schools active in Venice, founded in 1261, this institution is considered one of the most beautiful and monumental complexes, rich in works of art and architecture of immense artistic value.
The term “Scuola”, meaning “School”, was coined by the ancient Republic of Venice and was meant to identify a confraternity, brotherhood, or group of lay citizens who dedicated themselves to the material and mutual spiritual assistance, and who practiced, in honor of the patron saint of that school.
A defining moment for the School of St. John the Evangelist was the donation of the Relic of the Cross (1369), which since then became the symbol of the School and the object of an extraordinary veneration.
After the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797, the Schools were suppressed by a Napoleonic edict (1806 -1807), however, during the nineteenth century some were re-constituted, among them being the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista.
Today the School hosts art and architecture exhibition and is home to an internationally renowned meeting centre.
