This presentation disputes recent works of mainstream political science
that explain the current political crises in Latin American countries
as a "democratic recession." After studying grassroots movements and new
political parties, Matias Bianchi explains that an important factor is
the emergence of narratives, practices and tools that are averse to the
hierarchical, institutionalized and delegative of traditional politics.
This study is based on a survey to 1,094 activists from Latin America
and focus groups carried out in Honduras, Brazil and Ecuador. The
characteristics of the emergent political stakeholders show a different
way to participate in democracy with collaborative logics, networked
practices and cosmopolitan and opened views.
