A famous dictum states that “One learns more from mistakes than successes.” Mistakes are quite likely to occur in the field of geotechnical engineering where uncertainties about underground conditions tend to abound. Unfortunately, few are willing to discuss their mistakes. Understandably, most of us would rather trumpet our successes. Nevertheless, in the spirit of learning this seminar will describe a variety of failures and geotechnical challenges.

Some of the examples chosen are relatively well known, e.g., the failure of the Grand Teton dam, others less well known, the La Conchita landslide. Some examples are anonymous... others humorous. The topics covered range from conventional geotechnical issues to environmentally related problems. Hopefully all will shed some useful insights into how to avoid or minimize problems.
