A table of contents typically is an abbreviated listing of chapters in a book and provides an overview of what can be found on the pages within. In our workshop, we will be visually documenting our own personal stories and creating a one-of-a-kind Table of Contents that reflects the chapters of our lives. You will create a series of mixed media booklets that, when stacked together, express your story. The booklets can reflect different ages or stages in your life, people in your world, aspects of your self, experiences you have had, etc. Or you can simply make an unthemed, kick-ass artist book! Techniques we will explore together include painting in layers, surface design, book binding, creating patina on paper, mark making, and more.
$15 kit fee includes: paper, eyelets, needle and thread, and the following for shared use (but you are welcome to bring your own): embossing pad, powders and heat gun, alphabet and background rubber stamps, stencils, eyelet setting tools, assorted mixed media mediums, flotsam & jetsam, and all basic supplies on the list.

Student supply list:

2 book covers, approximately 6 x 9 inches. We will be painting over these but if you like a messy mixed media look, choose vintage covers that have loose threads and wonky edges.

Paper. Bring a good amount of 90-lb watercolor paper (cold press adds texture) for your book pages. Feel free to add your own touch by also bringing in other material for pages such as velum, transparencies, vintage book pages, photographs, thin fabric, tissue, handmade paper, cardstock, decorated paper, etc.

Gesso. Black and white.

Acrylic paint in your choice of colors.

Watercolor paint in your choice of colors.

Water container and paint pallete.

Brushes in a variety of sizes for painting and gluing (½ or 1 inch cheap bristle brushes are perfect). Also include a water brush and a tooth brush.

Mark makers such as gel pens, pencils, markers, paint pens, wax pastel crayons, etc.

Long fibers in your choice of color/materials to wrap around your finished book. Bring beads, charms or embellishments to add to the fiber if you like.

Matte medium

Ink Pads (my favorite are StazOn)

Craft sponges or daubers

Scissors and/or craft knife and cutting mat

Mixed media supplies. Bring your choice of unmounted stamps, rub-ons, stencils, stickers, etc. Be sure to bring alphabets/words in any of these forms.

Flotsam & Jetsam. This is how you make your book truly unique. Anything goes: ephemera, photographs, fabric scraps and/or trim, washi, duct and/or masking tape, your own small drawings, cancelled stamps, hand painted and/or gelli plate papers, die cuts, vintage and found paper, flat mementos and keepsakes, small envelopes, etc.
