MEXTRÓPOLI, International Festival of Architecture and the City is an opportunity to experience the city through architecture.
During the festival, Mexico City turns into the most important and diverse stage for thinking, creating, designing and enjoying the city. MEXTRÓPOLI encourages creative exercises and critical dialogue between the community, experts, and decision-makers. Through conferences, workshops, lectures, pavilions and open-air activities, Mexico City becomes a key global reference for architecture and urbanism.
MEXTRÓPOLI is the only Latin American forum that brings together more than 52 thousand people over 4 days: students, citizens, students, professionals, tourists, creatives, public servants, artists, opinion leaders and experts to generate knowledge, exchange, and achieve a new vision of the city through architecture.
MEXTRÓPOLI is possible thanks to a series of strategic partnerships with federal government institutions, especially the Ministry of Agrarian Territorial and Urban Development and other entities within the government of Mexico City. It is also worth mentioning the role of Mexican universities with architecture schools, the embassies, museums and other institutions that seek to build an urban culture by generating spaces for reflection about architecture and the city.
This year MEXTRÓPOLI will host 4 keynote conferences, 16 presentations, 14 exhibitions, 18 installations in public space, 6 book launches, 12 tours of the city, a special design fair, workshops, parties and more.
As part of the program in this new edition, various installations will be built using the public spaces around the Alameda Central of Mexico City. The following universities have been invited to contribute: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Universidad Anáhuac del Norte Campus Mexico City and Querétaro, Universidad Iberoamericana, Universidad Maristas de Mérida, Universidad de Los Andes de Bogotá and Sci-Arc de Los Angeles. Other installations include the Arquine and Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña in Lighting Design and Espacio Efímero graduate project, the Biblioteca Móvil de Alumnos47, an installation by Sasa Radulovic and Johana Hurme from Canada in partnership with Factor Eficiencia and the Pavilion of Infonavit. This area of the Alameda Central will hold four different exhibitions, one on Markets in CDMX with the support of the Economic Development Secretariat of CDMX, another area will bring together the projects from book RADICAL 50 Arquitecturas Latinoamericanas with the support from Secretary of Culture of CDMX and finally, two areas will be linked to public space projects.
In addition, the festival will see the realization of the MEXTRÓPOLI pavilion, the result of an open and anonymous international competition in which Matteo Ghidoni, from Milan, Italy was selected as the winner from among 200 proposals. His design is an architectural work with great conceptual strength, which dexterously uses contemporary language and simplicity in its materials and construction. It will be a provocative and poetic element that constructs a new relationship between the public space of Alameda Central and the private space of a room.
