On behalf of the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS), the Group of Genetics, Breeding and Biochemistry of Brassicas (MBG-CSIC) is pleased to invite scientists with an interest in brassicas to this Symposium, which will be held in Pontevedra (Galicia-Spain).
This Symposium will cover studies on many Brassica species, including important crops used as vegetables, edible oils, forages and raw materials, for obtaining bioactive compounds. The meeting is aimed at scientists working in a wide range of topics within the 'Brassica world', including diversity studies, resistance to stresses, or food technology. Over the last years, advances in plant biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology have greatly improved our understanding of plant physiology. In this regard, various 'omics' technologies enable qualitative and quantitative monitoring of the abundance of various biological molecules in a high-throughput manner, and thus allow the determination of their variation between different biological states on a global scale. For this reason, 'omics' studies will be a section of special relevance. The meeting will provide an excellent platform for participants to disseminate their progresses and to facilitate research exchange.
The symposium will be hosted in the amiable small town of Pontevedra which we think will be an excellent venue for this event. Pontevedra, a city with a long maritime and trading tradition, boasts one of the largest and most elegant historic quarters in the whole of Galicia. Its old town is the second largest 'old town' in Galicia, only after Santiago de Compostela. Pontevedra was on the route of the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James), namely its southern or 'Portuguese' branch. Nowadays, Pontevedra has evolved into one of the most accessible cities in the world and has been awarded with international prizes for its urban quality, like the European prize 'Intermodes' in Brussels in 2013, the 'ONU-Habitat' prize in Dubai in 2014 and the 'Excellence Prize' of the Center for Active Design in New York in 2015.
