Delve deep into Hiroshi Sugimoto’s work and create a photograph based on the intriguing work methods of this master photographer.

Hiroshi Sugimoto is an intellectual artist from Tokyo, Japan. His conceptual photographs challenge the viewer to reflect on photography and the history of mankind.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
During this workshop you will, among other things, experiment with shutter time and light to create an image in which abstraction and detail are combined. Sugimoto tries to erase all traces of human intervention in his photographs, creating a timeless image that hints towards a stillness of time. This workshop offers you the possibility to work on your photography in a conceptual manner and create a series of photographs under the guidance of a museum teacher.

The workshop begins with a short tour where you will be introduced to the work of Sugimoto. Together with the group you will explore his conceptual photography and learn about his precise work methods. After the tour you will receive two assignments and work on them in groups of 2-3 people.

DURING THE WORKSHOP
For the first assignment you need an item that represents a personal memory. Bring this item from home. You will photograph your personal object taking inspiration from Sugimoto’s series Dioramas and Portraits. In these series Sugimoto captures extreme detail and plays with light, as will you. The second assignment is inspired by the series Seascapes and Theatres. For this assignment you will get to wander the streets of Amsterdam looking for a horizon with as little human presence as possible. At the end of the workshop you will evaluate each other’s work along with the museum teacher. All results will be sent to you after the workshop.
