The Department of Psychology at Effat University invites the submission of papers for its 1st International Symposium on
Positive Psychology

Aim of the Symposium
To promote the science of positive psychology and its research-based applications.
To facilitate collaboration among researchers, teachers, students, and practitioners of positive psychology around the world and across academic disciplines.
To share the findings of positive psychology with the broadest possible audience.
Conference Keynote Speakers: Prof Malik Badri and Dr. Louise Lambert
Professor Malik Badri
Professor Badri obtained his MSc from the American University of Beirut (1958), his PhD from the University of Leicester, England (1961), and his Postgraduate Certificate of Clinical Psychology from the Academic Department of Psychiatry of the Middlesex Hospital Medical School of London University (1966). He was elected Fellow of the British Psychological Society in 1977 and now he is the holder of the title of Chartered Psychologist from the British Psychological Society. In recognition of his contributions in his field, he was awarded an honorary D.Sc. from the Ahfad University and was decorated by the President of Sudan in April 2003 with the medal of Shahid Zubair, the highest award for academic excellence.
Apart from being appointed as Distinguished Professor and Dean in various universities, Professor Badri was the founder of a number of departments of psychology and education. He also served as senior clinical psychologist in a number of hospitals and clinics in the Middle East and Africa and founded the Psychological Clinic of the University of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1971. Professor Badri was elected by UNESCO to be the expert in psychology for the then newly established Institute of Pedagogy in Bahirdar Ethiopia and was also given short appointments by the World Health Organization as a researcher and member of a committee in the field of traditional medical practices. In 2016, he was appointed holder of the prestigious Chair of Ibni Khaldun in the Faculty of Revealed Knowledge and Human Science of the International Islamic University in Malaysia. Professor Badri has published widely in psychology and education and his works has been translated into many languages of the Islamic world.
Dr Louise lambert
Dr. Louise Lambert, PhD., is a Registered Psychologist (#2659, College of Alberta Psychologists, Canada) with over 15 years’ experience in counselling centres, mental health, not-for-profit organizations, higher education and research, and primary healthcare organizations. She has lived in the United Arab Emirates for eight years and is finishing her current role as Associate Professor at the Canadian University Dubai and will start in January, 2018 with the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Al Ain, UAE, where she will be developing the Middle East’s first Positive University.
With a concentration in positive psychology, she has developed and delivered many evidence-based positive psychology intervention programs. Her "Happiness 101" program is used in clinical settings and has shown 6-month post treatment effectiveness (Lambert D’raven, Moliver, & Thompson, 2015), while the "Strengths Compass Program", a program used for the development of workplace character strengths in teens, young adults and entry-level employees (Lambert, Budhraja, Mullan, & Gupta, 2018) is being used in Saudi Arabia. More recently, her "Happiness Matters in University" program successfully showed sustainable increases in wellbeing after three months relative to a control group, as well as decreases in the fear of happiness (Lambert, Passmore, & Joshanloo, forthcoming). Her most recent program was adopted by the Kuwait Ministry of Education for use across all government schools under the “Bareec” title and under the patronage of Sheikha Intisar Al Sabah.
She is the co-editor and author of a locally relevant introductory psychology textbook and regional textbook in positive psychology, in which one of those chapters is a proposal for the development of wellbeing policy in the GCC region. Both of these have been accepted for publication by Springer for 2018. Dr. Louise is also the Editor of the Middle East Journal of Positive Psychology, a journal dedicated to uncovering human excellence in the Middle East region and heartily believes that a local, indigenous psychology can and must be nurtured, and has several publications on wellbeing in the region.
Submission Guidelines
Abstract Submissions:
An abstract of no more than 250 words (APA style) should be via Easy Chair before 7 January 2018. For any other inquires please view the "Contact" section and email the appropriate parties.
Abstracts should include the following:
-Title of paper
- First and family name of author(s)
- Institutional affiliation
- Current position and/or academic title
- Email address
- At least 5 keywords that best describe the subject area of your submission
Paper Submission:
All presenters are invited to submit papers or workshops based on their accepted abstracts related to the symposium topics listed above. Presentations are for 15-20 minutes, but the paper to be published in the symposium proceedings should not exceed 7,000 words, excluding appendices and references.
Requirements
Papers should describe original completed work rather than intended work, and should indicate clearly the state of completion of the reported results. A paper accepted for presentation at the symposium or any related workshops cannot be presented or have been presented at any other meeting with publicly available published proceedings. Papers that are being submitted to other conferences or workshops must indicate this on the title page.
All papers must bear an explicit positive psychology theoretical framework, model, theory, and/or concept as required by The Middle East Journal of Positive Psychology (MEJPP).
Articles using a wide range of methodologies such as theoretical, applied, empirical, quantitative and qualitative research in the various domains of positive psychology and culture will be accepted.
Presentations & Publication:
An accepted paper may have more than one author. However, the main presenter in the symposium must be specified.
Selected presenters may be asked to develop their papers for an internationally peer-reviewed volume on the topic as symposium proceedings, to be published in December 2019.
Visa Support: Effat University will provide administrative support with the visa issuance for all international presenters and participants.
