Cost:
This workshop, as with all Mitacs Step workshops, is free for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. However, the preauthorization of a valid credit card is required as part of the registration process. A $50 penalty will be applied to all late cancellations (cancellations that are not made 5 days or more before the workshop date), no shows, or incomplete attendance. These penalties are only charged after the completion of a workshop and no charges are ever made to interns who participate in full.

Description:

Policy making is a complex process, but talking about it doesn’t have to be. With the “Communication Essentials for Policy Fellows” workshop, Canadian Science Policy Fellows will learn how to best communicate policy goals and outcomes, engage with the media and the general public, and use storytelling principles to demonstrate the importance of their work. Facilitated by award-winning science journalist Jim Handman, the two-day workshop will provide fellows with a toolkit to spread the word on science policy, regardless of subject matter, audience, or complexity.

Workshop Objective:

To increase participant awareness and application of tools available to them to become better communicators interacting with government, media and the public.
