Responsibilities:

The Interdisciplinary Affective Sciences Lab (IASLab) in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University and the Departments of Psychiatry and Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School) is seeking a full time Coordinator of Scientific Communication to undertake research and communications activities relating to the lab’s ongoing grant-funded work in popular scholarly communication, and to develop the lab’s capacity to communicate through audio, print, and video media.

The successful applicant will work directly with the IASLab Directors (Lisa Feldman Barrett, PhD, and Karen Quigley, PhD) as well as an array of collaborators within the lab and from other institutions, including journalists, media producers and researchers, and editors. In addition to providing logistical and community support and documentation for a series of workshops that prepare scholars and researchers to write for the public, you will manage inbound requests from journalists and media producers, produce media (in print, audio, and video) about the lab’s work, engage in research and event-planning, and other support activities.

Qualifications:

1. An undergraduate degree in the behavioral sciences (e.g., psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science) required, and prior experience working in a behavioral science laboratory
2. Graduate-level work in science communication, advocacy, and/or journalism
3. Proficiency in audio and audiovisual media production, including hardware, software, and workflows
4. Demonstrated ability to read, understand, and communicate to the public about scholarly scientific sources, including comfort with pitching, producing, and publishing popular articles, podcasts, blogs, and/or other products for the general public about scientific research and the scientific process
5. Previous experience with event planning, including the documenting, and support for the logistics of external- and internal-facing scholarly or public science communication events
6. Excellent writing and communication skills, a strong motivation and expertise with submitting grant proposals to support public science communications. Examples of prior submitted proposals will be requested as part of the application process.
7. Have deep familiarity with the theory of constructed emotion, and the research projects of the IASLab
