The University of South Florida (USF) is a major research university, with close to $500 million/year of external grants and contracts. USF Leadership has made a strategic decision to enhance biomedical engineering (BME) by establishing a new Department of Medical Engineering, a true joint department between the USF Medical School and College of Engineering. This new department will house the highly successful graduate programs in BME and a new undergraduate major in BME – just the 4th such program in the State system. The University of South Florida invites applications for the founding position of Chair, Department of Medical Engineering. The successful candidate is expected to lead a team of graduate students in Ph.D. research and teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in biomedical engineering. The Chair will contribute to USF’s successes and priority research areas including neuroengineering, cardiac engineering, biomedical imaging, tissue engineering, nanotechnologies, drug delivery and drug development. This is the opportunity for a leader in bioengineering or biomedical engineering to develop novel initiatives aimed at enhancing graduate and undergraduate students’ participation in research teams composed of engineers, graduate students in biomedical engineering, and research-oriented physicians; as well as development of new and improved curricular and co-curricular experiences in clinical and hospital settings. An earned Ph.D. from a biomedical engineering or related discipline, and evidence of national prominence through superior scholarship, externally funded research, teaching excellence, and the ability to teach and mentor underrepresented groups is required. Competitive startup package and top-quality new lab space are available for such recruits; with these new faculty members participating in the design of their new lab space. An active research program with federal funding is a requirement. The University of South Florida is a high-impact, global research university dedicated to student success. USF is a Top 50 research university among both public and private institutions nationwide in total research expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation. Serving nearly 48,000 students, the USF System has an annual budget of $1.5 billion and an annual economic impact of $4.4 billion. USF is a member of the American Athletic Conference. The Academic Health Center Practice of Korn Ferry is assisting with this important search.
