Purpose: 
Under general supervision, the lifeguard ensures the safety of patrons of the AUC aquatic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies. The job holder will assist in the training, scheduling, and administration of the swimming pool.

Principal Accountabilities:
1. Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in and around the swimming pool facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency
2. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
3. Performs various maintenance duties around the pool deck and office as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility such as straightening deck chairs/umbrellas, checking lifeguard and pool equipment, clocks and others
4. Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports. This includes, but is not limited to, filling out incident report forms if any occur throughout the day. If an incident with a patron occurs, their information must be written (including student ID) on an incident report form along with mention of it in the daily logbook and report to security if necessary
5. Conducts water tests to produce accurate readings and maintain appropriate records. Must perform daily pool chemical tests of the water quality to be written in the daily log book
6. Enforces pool rules related to conduct, attire, swimming ability, and others
7. As necessary, administers and record patron swim proficiency tests
8. The pool must always be watched, along with surrounding deck space
9. Other duties as assigned

Rules to be followed to ensure a proper run of the swimming pool:
1. Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service. Uniform must be work at all times. Other clothes, jeans etc. are not allowed. Pool shoes and swimsuit must also be worn in case of an emergency. No sneakers
2. Lifeguard must sit in a designated chair with rescue tube at all times when patron(s) are in the pool
3. Depending on a number of people in the pool, more than one lifeguard may be required to sit in guard chair as designated by pool director or lifeguard coordinator
4. Must always be on time and not leave a shift early
5. No mobile phone, book, or any other item that would provide distraction should be in hand of a lifeguard when on duty. Mobile phones, or the like, must remain in guard office when on duty
6. Lifeguards must work in shifts as designated per day, and guard may not be in the chair for more than 30 minutes at a time to maintain focus
7. Vacation request must be sent to the pool director at least one week in advance in order to be approved. Vacation time with less than one week’s notice will not be approved
8. No laptops allowed in pool office or on the pool deck unless entire shift is completed
Physical fitness must be maintained and skills will be tested on a yearly basis. Failure to maintain both skill and fitness may be subject to dismissal

Requirements:
Minimum Education Requirement: University degree is required

Experience: 
A minimum of four years of previous experience including at least two years as a lifeguard

Skills:
1. Ability to react calmly and efficiently in emergency situations
2. Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
3. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skill evaluation as stipulated by the department
4. Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork
5. Knowledge and demonstration of CPR and emergency medical procedures
6. Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
7. Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures
8. Ability to pass a timed 400-meter swim fitness test
