The candidate will be responsible for a wide range of solar layout design and optimization civil engineering duties in support of the DNV GL Civil Engineering Team, Project Development, Owners Engineering Independent Engineering and Due Diligence Group, and other areas as the need may arise, including independent engineering reports and due diligence assessments of utility scale wind and solar power generation projects. DNV GL’s clients are often financial companies relying upon the report as part of their investment decision making process, project owners and contractors as an initial assessment as well as evaluation of life cycle constraints, as well as forensic evaluation and root cause analyses of civil engineering infrastructure failures.

Tasks May Include(Essential roles, responsibilities and activities a candidate may expect)

  • Conduct conceptual and detailed design studies for site layout, including access roads, PV module layout, turbine layout, and project civil infrastructure;
  • Evaluate site access and transportation capabilities for renewable energy projects for locations worldwide;
  • Design and review drainage plans for solar and wind energy facilities;
  • Conduct preliminary studies and constraints studies for civil engineering aspects of solar and wind energy projects;
  • Conduct detailed technical review and independent assessment of civil construction documentation including

    • Plans and specifications;
    • Design calculations and studies;
    • Construction submittals;
    • Test documentation;
    • Construction QA/QC documentation;
  • Develop conceptual designs and technical specifications, manage and review tenders, and support contract negotiations on behalf of clients;
  • Conduct construction monitoring inspections of projects to verify compliance with

    • Construction plans and specifications;
    • Applicable code requirements and standards and good construction practice;
  • Support Construction Management activities through monitoring/management of costs, progress, contract interface, and quality programs, and facilitation of construction problem resolution;
  • Conduct detailed technical review and independent assessment of civil construction documentation including

    • Plans and specifications;
    • Design calculations and studies;
    • Construction submittals;
    • Test documentation;
    • Construction job books and QA/QC documentation;
  • Conduct construction monitoring inspections of projects to verify compliance with

    • Construction plans and specifications;
    • Applicable code requirements and standards and good construction practice;
  • Provide regulatory and permitting consulting to clients;
  • Write detailed reports of reviews and inspections;

Position Qualifications

Requirements (Mandatory qualifications for this position)

  • Education – Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering
  • Years of related experience 3 to 7 years
  • Professional Licensing EIT and ability to obtain professional license within 2 years
  • Technical competencies Fluent in AutoCad and Civil 3D, Calculation tools such as MathCad and Excel
  • Proven HSE mindset and demonstrated behavior-based safety mentality
  • Able to work independently, and make independent decisions when called for.
  • Able to work with a geographically diverse team, within North America and internationally.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule and be able to keep in contact with international offices.
  • Up to 25 percent domestic travel (US and Canada), and must also be able to travel internationally.
  • Must be able to use common construction personal protective equipment, walk over uneven terrain, climb ladders.
  • Suitable MVR

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

  • Sc. in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineer Registration (P.E. or P.Eng. in one or more jurisdictions)
  • Detailed understanding of typical construction methods for Wind and Solar Energy.
  • Prior experience in utility scale and rooftop solar site design
  • Experience with common solar analysis tools (PVSYST, Helioscope, etc.)
  • Second Language
