American University of Sharjah (AUS), one of the premier institutions of higher education in the Middle East, seeks an accomplished academic leader for its College of Engineering. The college has established a reputation for leadership in engineering education in the United Arab Emirates and in the Gulf region.
The College of Engineering offers bachelor of science degree programs in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and mechanical engineering, which are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/. The bachelor of science degree program in computer science offered by the College of Engineering is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/. Graduate degrees include the master of science in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, engineering systems management, mechanical engineering and mechatronics engineering, and a newly established PhD program in engineering systems management. The college aspires to be recognized as the leading comprehensive research engineering college in the Arab world, known for its practice-based, partnership-centered, innovation-oriented and sustainable education ecosystem. The college enrolls approximately 2,200 undergraduate and 250 graduate students, and employs approximately 95 full-time faculty and a staff of approximately 35.
The administration, including all deans, are expected to continue the university’s trajectory toward excellence in education, research and scholarship, and expand its reputation as the university of choice in the region for students and faculty from across the globe. The Dean of the College of Engineering reports to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer and will continue to build on the strong reputation of the college and work with an accomplished faculty to advance the university’s mission. The dean will be expected to work in a collaborative manner to develop a strategic agenda that includes developing additional doctoral programs, expanding research and positioning the college to capitalize on the growing interest in engineering education in the region.
The successful candidate will demonstrate stellar academic credentials, including an earned doctorate, a significant research record, evidence of ability to secure research funding and build revenue, significant leadership and administrative experience, demonstrated budgetary/financial management ability, and understanding of and familiarity with the American higher education model. Experience in higher education (including teaching) is highly preferred, although a distinguished career in industry will also be considered. An extraordinarily diverse institution located in the Gulf Region with more than 90 nations represented in the student body, staff and faculty, AUS seeks a dean who can negotiate cross-cultural complexity, contribute to creating an environment characterized by collegiality and a sense of common purpose, and have a good understanding of the region.
