Duties & Responsibilities
Central Laboratories Unit (CLU) in Qatar UniversityisseekingaTransmutation Electronic Microscope (TEM) specialist torunandmaintainTEM and sample preparation for biological andsolidsamples.This is anon-supervisory position in which thecandidateappliesscientificprinciples and practical laboratory experiencetobringknowledge andtechnical ability to work closely with CLU stafftomanageand consulton all aspects of various research projects.Thesuccessfulcandidatewill provide structure elucidation supporttoouracademics,researchers, postgraduates and students indifferentfields.We arelooking for a highly skilled and motivatedindividual, whoiscapable towork independently, understands and valuescross-functional teamwork.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• The selected candidate willoverseethedailyoperation of the Transmutation ElectronicMicroscope(TEM)facility,with responsibilities including
• Responsible for operating, andmaintenanceofTEMinstrument, recording and -interpretation of allTEMimagingrequested bythe various CLU users.
• Responsible forestablishingsamplepreparationfacility that includes, but not limited to,dimpling,ionmilling, jet electro-polishing.
• Responsible for preparation ofdifferenttypeofTEM samples.
• Development of standardoperatingproceduresandpolicies in TEM facility.
• Training and certify users on theproperandsafeuse of the TEM instrument.
• Providing researcherswithstate-of-the-artTEMinstrumentation and technical support inTEMexperimental design.
• The TEM facility specialistwillparticipateinthe preparation and writing of instrumentationgrantproposals aswellas engage in collaborative research with facultyandoutside users.
• Develop instrument scheduling,usepoliciesandcharge rates in collaboration with the CLU director.
• Help users achieve independenceontheinstrumentand assist users in assessing theirexperimentalandinstrumental needs.
• Acting as a resource byfieldingquestionsandoffering expert guidance in available TEM methods.
• Assist faculty, outsideusersandcorporateclients with TEM experimental design, dataacquisition,andanalysis ofexperimental results.
• Coordinates with Quality Assurancestafftoensurethe implementation of corrective actions.
• Develop and apply Quality Control(QC)methodsandinstrument standby conditions to assure user ready operation.
• Ensure that instruments aremaintainedtothehighest working standards, including regularhardware/software maintenance.
• Determine cryogen fillschedule;ordercryogens;oversee and/or perform cryogen fill.
• Oversee the installation ofnewhardwareandsoftware; negotiate and supervise any service contractswithvendors.
• Order parts and/or services as required.
• Develop independentresearchprogramsasappropriate to CLU and Qatar University goalsand/orengageincollaborative research with members of the CLU when appropriate.
• Publishing original work inpeerreviewedjournalsand/or attend scholarly conferences and givingtalksandpresentationsabout the TEM facility and research activities.
• Participating in the writingandpreparationofTEM instrumentation grants within guidelines determinedbytheCLUdirector; and perform other duties as assigned.
• Willing to develop appropriateTEMmethodsforcertain identified projects.
• To work in open access instrumentstosupportCLUusers and deliver result in a timely manner.
• To support the projects from start to completion.
• Assists in the developmentandimplementationofsafety projects impacting all CLU laboratory personnel.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications
• PhD in chemistry,biochemistry,materialsscience,physics, or related disciplines earnedfrom anaccredited andawell-recognized university.
• Experience in establishing ahighqualityTEMsample preparation facility is highly preferred.
• Experience in skillfullyoperatingandmanagingthe TEM facility and overseeing instrument usageandmaintenanceishighly preferred.
• Experience in both software and hardware aspects with different types of TEM instrument are preferred.
Required Skills
• A minimum of 5 years actual hands-on experience with TEM applications in structure elucidation of small molecules and bio macromolecules and solid materials.
• Excellent skills in experimental design, pulse sequence implementation, and data analysis as well as excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required.
• Extensive TEM knowledge both in running the equipment and interpretation of results.
• Having a good track record of publications in the field of TEM spectroscopy.
• Having a strong work ethic and a solid record of problem solving and technical results.
• Highly skilled in the use of TEM software and hardware including cryo-probes and the application of automation.
• Technically inclined with the ability to troubleshoot complex instrument problems such as automation and robotic systems.
• IT literate with the ability to manipulate data workflows in a networked environment.
• Users focused and driven to continually work towards technical and process improvements.
• Excellent leadership skills staff management skills are required.
• Willingness to co-operate with biology, materials science, health science, pharmacy and chemistry staff are required.
