Position Summary:

· The Director of Government Relations shall assist the ASOSU in promoting self-governance in the best interest of students at Oregon State University. This includes, but is not limited to,
advocating and lobbying for students at the state and federal level, and ensuring that OSU students are educated on key legislative issues regarding students’ success and well-being.
The Director of Government Relations also oversees the Government
Team and works closely with the Coordinator of Government
Relations to ensure these successes together..

Position Duties:

· Legislative Advocacy: 60%

Maintain current knowledge of on and off campus legislative issues, resources, legislators, and legislative advocacy areas for student input.

Be responsible for gathering information and tracking legislation and programs that affect OSU students through collaboration with the Oregon Student Association and OSU Government Relations

Office and the Center for Civic Engagement.

Serve on the Oregon Student Association Board of Directors and attend OSA Board of Directors meetings and events, which occasionally includes weekends.

Inform students on issues and legislation of importance and gather student opinion on the issues.

Advise specific Executive staff on legislative issues that directly affect their constituents.

Advise the ASOSU Executive Cabinet on state and federal legislative issues.

Identify and develop areas of involvement at the state and federal level for ASOSU engagement.

Be responsible for establishing effective working relationships with key Congressional offices, as well as key Congressional committees at the state and federal level.

Focus on the Oregon Congressional delegation and work to establish an ongoing exchange of information with both local and

Washington, D.C. offices of the delegation.

Invite members of Congress, members of the Oregon Congressional delegation, and members of the State Legislature to visit campus and work to involve ASOSU in those visits.

· Organizing work: 20%

Organize lobbying trips to Salem on behalf of ASOSU in conjunction with external organizations, such as the Oregon

Student Association and the Presidential Student Legislative Advocates.

Organize a delegation to lobby in Washington, D.C. on behalf of students of OSU.

Assist and oversee ASOSU’s involvement voter registration campaign.

Recruit interns and volunteers who are interested in legislative activities to be part of the team.

· Administration: 20%

Assist the Chief of Staff by providing relevant input during budgeting processes.

Report to the ASOSU Congress at least once per term.

Recruit and oversee the Government Relations Team.

Meet bi-weekly with the Coordinator of Government Relations.

Meet with ASOSU Faculty Advisor twice per month for one-on-ones.

Other duties as assigned by the ASOSU President and ASOSU Vice President.

Attend biweekly staff and cabinet meetings.

As an Officer of the Associated Students of Oregon State University Executive Branch, you are obligated to be active in the recruitment of new interns and volunteers, maintain a clean office environment and work space, dynamically participate with the ASOSU team, maintain a strong presence at campus and

community events, and actively reach out to other student groups.

Exceptional communication skills in areas including but not limited to interpersonal, public speaking, digital, verbal, and written.

Ability to manage time and work accurately with interruptions to meet a deadline

Strong organizational skills and ability to delegate tasks to Coordinator of Government Affairs

Work well under pressure

Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment, and discretion

Experience with legislative affairs at local, state, or federal level

Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students, and enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours during the school year.

Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 for graduate students, and enrolled in a minimum of five credit hours during the school year

Must be in good academic and conduct standing for the term prior to selection and during entire period of employment

Must be available for training from September 9th to September 22nd

- Ability to work independently as well as in a team

- Experience working with notable campus organizations, such as ASOSU, OSUPC, DCE, SLI, and more

- Experience in leading and directing individuals

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The student worker may be required to work up to an approximate 20 hours per week.
