PRIMARY PURPOSE:

This is a bench strength / succession planning position. The position will be located at Bennettsville, SC in support Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) activities while learning the business of Particleboard and MDF manufacturing. This includes communication, implementation, administration, and monitoring of various EHS programs, processes, procedures, and systems (i.e., ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001) in support of strategic goals.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Conduct EHS projects / tasks as assigned

  • Provide support to site and corporate EHS staff

  • Help ensure compliance with state, local, and federal EHS laws and regulations

  • Write and/or update written safety and environmental programs, SOP’s, and/or Work Instructions

  • Help develop EHS training materials

  • Review contractor safety programs and safety performance

  • Help maintain EHS related files and document and maintain databases in an accurate and timely basis

  • Perform regular area EHS inspections and determine appropriate or preventive or corrective measures and follow-up to ensure effectiveness

  • Assist in incident investigations and corrective action follow-through as needed

  • Assist as needed in environmental activities including emission testing, sample collection, parameter monitoring, waste and recycling tracking, inspections, and other environmental activities, including Title V, SPCC, and SWPP Plan compliance

  • Support company and plant sustainability goals, objectives, and targets

  • Collect and analyze EHS data as required. Contribute to the development of action items resulting from the analysis

  • Participate in company EHS Audits and offsite meetings as needed

  • Support major maintenance activities

  • Other duties arising from completion of initiatives goals and continuance of the strategic plan

KEY EXPECTATIONS SUPPORTING ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:

  • Participate in performance feedback process

  • Participate in development of EHS annual action plan

  • Routinely update Initiative Tracker database

  • Develop skills of in support of role (e.g., particleboard and MDF manufacturing, Method 9 visible emissions, OSHA and EPA regulations, control device knowledge, and other skills as determined to be necessary)

  • Travel to other company locations as needed. Travel estimated 10-20% of time

KEY SAFETY/HOUSEKEEPING REPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain awareness of and execute good safe practices at all company facilities as it applies to your activities there

  • Attend and participate in EHS meetings and training as required

  • Consider safety in all activities. Lead by example

  • Coach others on their contributions to prevent incidents and reduce environmental impacts

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Safety, Environmental Engineering, or Health & Safety / Environmental related fields of study

  • Desire 0-2 years of relevant safety and environmental experience with EHS internships in a manufacturing environment preferred

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills. Is dedicated and reliable

  • Familiar with EPA and/or OSHA regulations

  • Familiar with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards

  • Ability to work at heights is critical to this job
