The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for exciting new mechanical design and development activities within current product support as well as new product development projects. This person is a member of the Product Development team with primary responsibilities to design, analyze, test, and troubleshoot mechanical components and assemblies for new product development and sustaining activity. The person must be able to operate independently in a fast-paced, dynamic, highly technical environment and work on multiple concurrent, cross-functional projects. This position requires involvement in all phases of the product development lifecycle, including research, design, validation, documentation, release, and maintenance.

Accountabilities and responsibilities

  • Accelerate new product development through the use of computational modeling techniques such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using commercial software package (ANSYS Workbench) by reducing the number of design iterations/ prototypes to be tested in real-time
    • FEA allows the accurate prediction of the response of a system/ product that is subject to a broad range of physical phenomena such as elastic or plastic deformation, free and forced vibration and static and dynamic loading (impact analysis)
    • CFD enables the accurate prediction of the performance of the client’s mass flow meters and controllers by simulating the flow of liquids and gases through the devices under various operating conditions
  • Develop multi-physics models that integrate fluid, structural and electro-magnetic analyses to accurately predict the performance of the client’s flow measurement devices and suggest design changes for improved performance, cost-reduction and/or ease of manufacturability
  • Create 3D models of parts and assemblies with Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages such as Solidworks
  • Evaluate the new product designs through experimental testing involving flow calibration with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-traceable calibration standards such as molbloc/molbox gas flow calibration systems
  • Use data acquisition tools such as LabVIEW during fluid flow measurement and testing procedures
  • Perform development, hands-on design, test and support of precision mechanical components and assemblies for precision flow instrumentation
  • Translate engineering decisions into engineering models and drawings and coordinate with other departments, vendors, testing, trials and ramp to production

Education, experience and proficiencies

  • BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering is REQUIRED plus 2+ years NPD/PD experience
  • Experience with Solidworks is REQUIRED
  • Experience with ANSYS or other analysis packages is REQUIRED
  • Experience with fluid dynamics is desirable
