The Battery Lead Structural Engineer is responsible for leading the mechanical integration inside and outside of a high-voltage battery pack. They are involved with the latest battery technology in General Motors electrified vehicles portfolio for both current and future vehicles. They will work with a high-performance team and will be responsible providing technical direction over other engineers. The Battery Lead Structural Engineer will directly affect the quality, durability and performance of future hybrid, plugin and battery electric vehicles manufactured by GM.

This job is based in General Motor’s Warren Technical Center and will work with GM’s Global Battery Systems Lab. The lab is a state of the art facility operates 24/7, covers 85,000 square-feet on the Warren Tech Center campus, and has capabilities to test 112 battery packs and 120 battery cells at a time. The General Motors Technical Center has been named a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. The campus opened in 1956 and houses the GM vehicle engineering center, design center, research and manufacturing engineering. It is the workplace of over 18,000 employees on a 1.1 square-mile campus.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Exercise technical direction over other engineers for the design and release of the battery pack structural components.
  • Lead problem resolution activities for structural components within the battery and interfacing structures
  • Support structures DREs to ensure that their components meet program imperatives.
  • Provide Technical Leadership on pack enclosure and component sealing to the organization
  • Utilize UG skills to design, check designs and run basic analysis as required
  • Lead and Mentor DREs to deeply understand formability and tooling required to produce each part
  • Mentor DREs to assess the cost impacts of each feature
  • Transfer knowledge and best practices from Body Engineering to Battery Engineering.
  • Review pack designs prior to kicking off crashworthiness or durability CAE
  • Provide trade study analysis as a decision tool for design trade-off activities
  • Stay abreast of new material, forming, and joining technology and competitive products
  • Support preproduction and production builds events as necessary
  • Design and Release RESS structural components as workload dictates
  • Lead a Structures Sub-PDT
  • Supplier oversight for all Structural Items
  • Represent structures work in RESS PDT and Vehicle CIT
  • Support Program Management and report-outs per EGM direction
  • Communicate, coordinate and consult with engineering departments and stakeholders
  • Support Change Control once designs are frozen on structural parts
  • Sign off and track any deviations in builds from plan for structural components
  • Issue tracking (PRTS)
  • Build schedule and part fidelity

Required Skills And Experience
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ Years’ experience with parts design and release
  • Experience with design and integration of structural components
  • Proficient computer skills including analyzing data, creating presentations
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of automotive energy storage systems
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex
  • Time management skills to meet agreed upon customer deliverables, able to manage multiple projects
  • Interpersonal styles and communication skills to work effectively with local and international team members
  • Technical writing ability to create written engineering evaluation reports
  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering drawings and specifications
  • Experience with Unigraphics NX
  • Experience with structural analysis

Preferred Skills And Experience
  • Master’s degree in Engineering
  • High voltage or electrified vehicle safety training and hands on work experience
  • 10+ Years’ experience with a major automotive OEM
  • 5+ Years’ experience with design and integration of structural components
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
