JOB OVERVIEW:

Responsible for the design of substation apparatus for generation, transmission and distribution substations from low voltage to EHV systems with emphasis on quality and project costs following client’s requirements and internal company’s quality control and quality assurance practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Apply standard structural codes and techniques for substation project work with a focus on foundations and steel design.

  • Structure and foundation design will include analysis and design of new or expansion of substation facilities as well as the evaluation of existing facilities. The candidate should be familiar with using commercially available software such as L-Pile, RISA 3-D, and PCA Mats Concrete Design.

  • The candidate will be responsible for developing steel construction specifications for substation packagers and reviewing structural calculations to confirm they are in conformance with specifications.

  • In addition to the structural responsibilities, the candidate will also perform other substation engineering functions including

  • Design substations utilizing applicable codes and client standards (if available). Typical design to include general arrangement, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, cable trench, grounding, conduit drawings, details, bills of material, and AC and DC power systems.

  • Design ground grids based on applicable codes utilizing industry available software.

  • Complete calculations such as AC and DC load, bus spans, and ampacity calculations.

  • Create equipment and material specifications for procurement of engineered equipment as well as development of design scope and cost estimates.

  • Complete conceptual designs and layouts for facility planning studies.

  • Provide technical direction and on-the-job training to drafters, engineering technicians, and less experienced engineers.

  • Develop, nurture, and maintain trusted relationship with senior level engineers, managers, and executives with current or prospective clients.

  • Confidently and comfortably present technical solutions to key customers. Response in real time to technical concerns and answer questions in a knowledgeable articulate manner.

  • Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data.

  • Perform/Ensure company’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) processes are been follow on all design packages.

  • Delegate, plan, prioritize and review the work of other engineers.

  • Provide Project Management functions for projects

  • Proficient with drafting programs such as AutoCAD and Microstation a plus.

  • Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data.

  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members, engineering technicians and drafters. Regularly meets and corresponds with clients or outside personnel.

  • Delegating, planning, prioritizing and reviewing the work of other engineers, designers, and drafters.

  • Coordinate with other engineering discipline.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or MS in Civil or Architectural Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.

  • PE registration is required.

  • Experience in transmission, distribution and generating stations is preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.

  • Job will generally be performed in an office environment, but may require travel to visit a Client’s office and job sites.
  • When performing outside PGE office, appropriate safety training and safety equipment will be provided by PGE and/or Client as required.
  • While performing duties of this job, would occasionally require to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects and tools.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
