Dimensions is a program in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) at Syracuse University. Office of Multicultural Affairs mission is to support and promote the academic achievement, multicultural competence, social development, civic engagement and the retention of undergraduate students from historically underrepresented racial groups at Syracuse University.
Dimensions is a peer-to-peer mentoring program for self-identified women of color. This program endeavors to create a sisterhood for its members through intentional dialogue and activities that support self-confidence, academic success, and cross-cultural engagement. Dimensions women strengthen leadership skills and their critical thinking to help support the communities they are a part of.
Job Description: This position is not intended to replace the academic advisors assigned to them by their home-colleges. The academic consultant (AC) serve as general advisor and mentor, following best practices in multicultural advising and instruction with the ultimate goal of supporting the holistic development and needs of students. The AC for Dimensions works closely with the Coordinator of Dimensions Mentoring Program. The AC can be assign up to 25 students. In addition to their advising role, consultants attend weekend programming, which includes Dime Series, Sistah Circles in the fall/spring semester, and facilitate leadership and professional development workshops. Academic consultants will also perform administrative duties as assigned by the coordinator.
Qualifications:
Must be enrolled in a graduate program at Syracuse University for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Be able to work with and meet deadlines
Be able to conduct oneself professionally and ethically in a setting where confidential and sensitive work regarding students is conducted
Be able to maintain confidentiality when working with students and student information
Be able to communicate and collaborate with staff in other offices across campus
Be able to work with students in individual and group settings
Possess excellent communication and organizational skills
Take initiative to improve current and/or to create new programs and processes
Respond to email, phone and other correspondence within a 24-hour period
