Tetra Tech Inc. is seeking local biologists to assist with early environmental studies for potential wind energy development sites. The work will involve recording movements of eagles and other raptors. The field assistants will be responsible for conducting eagle surveys, adhering to standardized protocols as trained by Tetra Tech staff, completing accurate data collection forms, and sending weekly data updates to our office in Portland, Oregon. Tetra Tech is looking for up to two (2) field biologists to begin work on or about the week of December 15, 2015 in San Diego County and to continue work as late as December 2016. Applicants must be willing to commit to one (1) day of surveys every-other week, not including travel to the field location. The field assistants will work as a team to complete surveys on a given day. Preference will be given to applicants with a strong avian survey background, including sight and sound identification, and those willing to commit to a full year of field work. Applicants will be responsible for their own housing; however, transportation costs to and from the site will be compensated. This is apart-time as needed position.

Education, Experience And Qualification

  • B.S. Science (Biology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, or related field)
  • Prior experience identifying local birds by sight and sound
  • Ability to identify and age raptors in flight, particularly eagles
  • Ability to maintain focus throughout the surveys
  • Ability to work independently and as a team, follow verbal and written instructions, and professionally adhere to stringent protocols
  • Located within a 2-hour one-way commute of the project in San Diego county
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Willingness to adhere to all personal safety requirements associated with working in rural, isolated areas
  • Willingness to work long hours in harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain (e.g., extreme heat, high winds, all forms of precipitation)
  • Ability to utilize a compass and/or GPS unit
