Nest is looking for a highly motivated Materials Engineer to join our Product Design team. You will be part of an uber-talented multi-disciplinary team to select, develop and qualify environmentally-friendly materials for the next generation of Nest Products.
The work:
- Identify and develop new environmentally-friendly materials for future products roadmap
- Be the Sustainability Champion for all technical investigations across the company
- Deep engagement with global material suppliers on multiple projects at once, ensure material DOEs are carried out, analyze test results and help select the best material for an application
- Research cutting-edge materials and undertaking scoping studies : find the “next big thing” in sustainable materials
- Work closely with Corporate Sustainability, Product Design, Industrial Design, Operations and Reliability teams on material qualification and pass all product level testing
- Work with Environmental Engineers to develop and document Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) for materials as well as end-of-life of product
- Travel to factories in Asia to provide on-site support for project trials and builds
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS Materials Science degree or similar, specializing in Plastics and/or Metals
- 5+ years industrial experience with plastics and/or metal alloys design and manufacturing
- English communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree or PhD in Materials Science or similar
- Preferred previous industry experience designing materials for high-volume manufacturing of consumer electronics products
- Hands-on experience with post-consumer recycled plastics is highly desirable
- Hands-on experience with recycled aluminum alloys, stainless steel is highly desirable
- Knowledge of sustainable material design, functionality, performance standards, specifications and test procedures.
- Knowledge of plastics and/or metals manufacturing, supply chain and costing.
- Experience working with material suppliers and part manufacturers in Asia
- Strong organization and project management skills
- Thrives in chaos, obsessed with customer experience, focused on owning the end-to-end product experience, will do what it takes to get the job done and passionate about how sustainability can make the world a better place
- Position will require frequent international travel
