The Department of Civil Engineering (CVE) at American University of Sharjah invites applications for the position of Laboratory Instructor commencing in Fall Semester 2019. The successful candidate will support the Department of Civil Engineering, Department Head of Civil Engineering and faculty, and other lab instructors in the Structures and the Geotechnical Laboratories, by coordinating and performing a wide variety of tasks and services, but not limited to the list below.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Monitor and implement health and safety regulations and codes of practice in the laboratory.
2. Conduct recitations in statics and mechanics of materials.
3. Prepare laboratories for instruction.
4. Conduct sessions (labs) on AutoCAD drawing, structural engineering software and MATLAB.
5. Deliver pre-lab lecture.
6. Assist in the preparation/modification of the laboratory manual.
7. Recommend needed materials, components and equipment.
8. Perform routine maintenance of laboratory and related equipment, supplies and specimens.
9. Complete an annual inventory of laboratory equipment.
10. Make requisition for necessary equipment and supplies.
11. Train students to operate equipment related to labs.
12. Assist with recitation sessions and class demonstrations.
13. Assist students in the use of software related to courses or labs.
14. Grade lab assignments, reports and homework.
15. Maintain a record of students' lab marks and take attendance in the labs and hold regular office hours.
16. Maintain order and neatness of the laboratory.
17. Assist the department during academic counseling and specifically with the scheduling of lab sections.
18. Proctor exams with faculty.
19. Substitute for other lab instructors as needed.
20. Assist students with class projects and senior design projects requiring laboratory activity.
21. Work with department head and faculty on occasional CVE events, such as conferences, workshops, lab visits by external entities or individuals, and promotional and recruitment activities.
22. Improve procedures and functions of the laboratories in which the applicant will be working.
23. Perform other related duties as necessary.

Qualifications Required:
1. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering preferably with two years of experience in academia or industry.
2. Experience in structural and geotechnical engineering laboratory.
3. Experience with operating different testing equipment
4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
5. High standards of interpersonal skills.
6. General computer skills and the competency in using MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint, and specific training and skills in AutoCAD, SAP, ETABS and SAFE.
7. Ability to develop competencies in iLearn and Banner (if not already able to use the systems).
