Responsibilities:
The Mellon Computer Science Postdoctoral Fellow, based in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, will be a key player in the intellectual and technical development of the Open Islamicate Texts Initiative (OpenITI) Arabic-script OCR Catalyst Project (AOCP) and in the larger research program in digital humanities and natural language processing at Northeastern’s NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks. The initial appointment will be for 12 months, renewable for a second year, beginning August 1, 2019, (or later, by mutual agreement) and ending on or after July 31, 2021. The position will come with a full benefits package, new computer, and professional development funds for conference travel.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have a research profile in natural language processing, computer vision, optical character and handwritten text recognition, or related areas of machine learning. The chosen candidate will be responsible for building, training, and testing layout analysis models and OCR model combination and adaptation, in consultation with Prof. David Smith and assisted by the CS graduate fellow. The postdoctoral fellow will also co-author publications for CS conferences and journals; contribute to the technical portions of the publication on computational bibliography for Persian and Arabic typefaces and printing history; and be responsible for documenting models and code. Apart from this work on the OpenITI AOCP project, the selected candidate will have an approximately 20% time allocation for other research projects.
