The Mechanical Engineer position will support the role of the Project Manager and Mechanical Engineering Manager in the development of scope documents, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, process layouts, equipment specification and equipment selection. The position will play a leadership role by providing the fundamental sizing and design of liquid (cooling water, potable water, fuel oil) and gas (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, natural gas, compressed air) piping systems, air handling systems, pump/fan sizing, control systems (pressure regulation, valving, damper/actuator selection and sizing), cooling towers selection, cooling capacities calculations, etc. Individuals with experience in the design of heat treatment furnaces, incinerators, combustors, metal production furnaces and similar backgrounds will have relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • BS Mechanical Engineering or ME Technology required.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience with designing piping and industrial air handling systems, including the preparation of scope documents, PFDs, P&IDs, process layouts/design drawings, fabrication and erection details.
  • Minimum 5 years AutoCAD experience with version 2007 or later; and a minimum of 3 years experience using version 2010 of later, Experience using MEP and Inventor design software a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience through team lead role or supervisor role.
  • Ability to travel (up to 25%)
  • Glass melting furnace and glass batch plant experience a plus.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience with 3D programs Autodesk Plant 3D, Autodesk Plant P&ID and Inventor
  • Ability and experience to design piping systems for liquid and gaseous handling, including sizing of pumps, head loss calculations, pump sizing, control and regulation, and safety system design.
  • Ability and experience to design industrial air handling systems including sizing of fans/blowers for air cooling systems, combustion air systems, head loss calculations, design troubleshooting, design/capacity optimization, etc.
  • Understanding of gas safety requirements sufficient to recognize need for application of code design principles/requirement, including compressed air, nitrogen, hydrogen, natural gas, and blended gases.
  • Knowledge of shop operations and fabrication practices a plus.
  • Experience with glass melting furnaces a plus but not required
  • Experience in pump sizing/specification, safety system, pressure loss calculations a plus.

Typical Duties:

  • In concert with the Project Manager and/or the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor, provide design data/design calculations for sizing of liquid and gas piping system, air handling systems, and specification of related devices and components.
  • Provide oversight of mechanical designers and drafting persons to advance design detailing through procurement and fabrication steps.
  • Support Procurement Services by producing and/or checking material lists and specification sheets for specialized/custom fabrications and devices.
  • Provide interface with the customer to assist in scope development, troubleshooting, process improvement, and general technical assistance when called upon.
  • Estimating of new construction, minor repair, major repair projects, including engineering, materials and labor estimates for mechanical systems.
  • Interface with other disciplines to ensure seamless design integration.
  • Provide site assistance during troubleshooting, major repairs, or new construction in the area of mechanical system replacement, modification, or greenfield construction.
  • Should be able to insure that the designs provide the best combination of technical accuracy and practical application.
  • Should be able to coordinate work with other disciplines (civil, structural, refractory and sheet metal).
  • Must be able to perform independently on most assignments.
