Purpose: The American University in Cairo is embarking on a critical strategy to transform its services to students and society, optimize and protect all its operations, empower its faculty and staff, and bolster its academic and research capabilities. Effective and forward-looking exploitation of digital technology is one of the critical factors for success. The University will appoint a Chief Digital Officer to spearhead the strategy and to lead a high-performing inter-disciplinary team continues to refine and execute this strategy.
The job holder will directly report to the University President. As a member of the senior executive team, he/she will interact directly with senior stakeholders within the University, including its Board of Trustees, and will represent the University to external parties in matters under his or her authority. Principal Accountabilities:
The job holder's responsibilities will span the full range from strategy formation, to leading the execution within a complex and unique organization in the globally competitive field of higher education. He/she will lead, develop, manage, and mentor, the IT staff; ensure continuous updating of technical infrastructure; develop and adhere to detailed operational budgets; interact with multiple end-users, service providers, and stakeholders. Also, will be accountable for key support elements of the University’s core mission and identity, from student satisfaction with their daily and academic experience to the continuous improvement of faculty and staff operational support to national and global public image and reputation.
He/she will bring or will quickly acquire technical mastery sufficient to assess and to manage operations of such technical disciplines such as advanced hybrid cloud infrastructure, connected campus and modern workplace collaboration, enterprise-grade applications, security, advanced analytics and Artificial Intelligence, new innovation and others. Our aspiration is to develop great talent, and combined with smart and creative ways of using advanced technology is to spearhead the true digital transformation of our operations, academic and research experience, student and external communities interaction and present AUC as a beacon of innovation in the MENA region.
The job holder will display a high level of thought leadership, agility, creativity, risk-management, flexibility as he/she and the University develop the role and expectations over time. This role requires not only visionary entrepreneurship but also a total focus on measurable, practical results in both the near and longer-terms.
Requirements:
A disciplined, focused leader able to formulate strategy, build and mentor high performing teams, set the highest standards for executing and delivering complex projects on time and on budget. He/she must possess exceptional written and oral communication capabilities in English (with professional-level spoken Arabic a plus), influencing skills and a unique combination of creative appreciation of technology and entrepreneurial acumen.
Relevant experience and achievement in academic organizations, teaching, and research are not strictly required but would prove strong assets. The job holder must have expertise in enterprise and modern applications design, business productivity, collaboration, and knowledge management tools, web, mobile and social media interactions, cloud computing concepts and strategy, databases, and business intelligence. Appreciation of architecture, life cycle management, and end-user experience are also essential.
