The College of Engineering at New Mexico State University (NMSU) invites nominations including self-nominations for a tenured senior faculty position at the rank of Full Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department starting as early as January 1, 2018. Current senior associate professors promotable to full professor at the time of hiring will also be considered. The successful candidate will carry the endowed title of Forrest Mooney Professor and must have an earned Ph. D., or equivalent, in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field. Particular expertise is sought in the areas of un-manned systems, robotics, and autonomy, orbital mechanics, space structure, structural health monitoring, or related emerging aerospace engineering fields. The successful candidate is expected to have ongoing funded research in his/her areas of expertise. Duties for the positions include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the discipline, sustaining a vibrant externally-funded research program, and providing services to the University and the profession. The Forrest Mooney Professor will play a leading role in building and maintaining a strong aerospace engineering program, mentoring junior faculty colleagues, organizing large team-oriented research grants and centers.

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department currently has 16 faculty members, with active research in robotics, control, un-manned systems, thermal-fluids sciences, structural mechanics, and micro-mechanics. It seeks to expand and apply its expertise to aerospace related areas, in addition to the existing areas of energy, thermal management, mechanics, and control.

New Mexico State University is situated in the city of Las Cruces in the southern New Mexico area with vibrant space related research and activities. Spaceport America is an hour drive away, where commercial space flight is the key business with research infrastructure and activities related to sub-orbital ventures and plans for orbital launch capabilities. Three of the four NASA flight opportunity launch providers are located at Spaceport America, (e.g., Virgin Galactic has chosen Spaceport America as its point of launch for their astronaut and research flights). White Sands Missile Range is within an hour’s drive, where long-range missile testing is conducted. NASA White Sands Facility, a mere 30 minutes away, houses test and analysis equipment for critical and hazardous systems and materials. Several national laboratories in New Mexico provide ample opportunities for research collaboration: Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, and Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base, all within driving distance. Las Cruces possesses federally restricted space for flight testing and research that has easy to apply for access. The greater Las Cruces area enjoys year-round mild weather, a low-crime environment, plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, and an affordable cost of living.
