Reports to: Assistant Director for Special Projects, Libraries and Learning Technologies: Rare Books and Special Collections Library (RBSCL)
Purpose:The job holder will assist in creating an open-ended, expandable public resource for the history of gardens and horticulture until the present day, with focus on the numerous pleasure-gardens, parks, and royal palace gardens that have existed (or still exist) in Egypt. The project is inspired by a sense of urgency to document the urban history and architectural heritage of Cairo before it is irretrievably lost. He/she will also assist students, faculty and international researchers in finding and using the library materials in Horticulture, contribute to the review, selection and deselection of library materials.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Assist in scanning local holdings at AUC to compile a systematic bibliography of authentic source material that the project relies on to document the layout of gardens, their location, and the plants that existed in these gardens
2. Assist in the search and compiling of historic photographs of historic botanical gardens in Egypt, and collect reliable information about
3. Provide Research help related to horticulture subject to AUC community and national universities researchers on a daily basis including Saturdays Assist patrons and staff in locating and using library information resources with specialization in horticulture and gardening
4. Cover the research help desk on a daily basis, including tasks related to patrons: checking in and checking out materials as needed, registering patrons, collecting fines using automated circulation system, Sierra
5. Maintain and prepare circulation regular statistical reports with special emphasis on horticulture materials (Desk manager).
6. Apply library policies and procedures for circulation and reference services
7. Provide research help desk services on Saturdays, during special events, extended hours and late shifts
8. Mentor, train, and direct all assigned library work-study students assisting in horticulture off prints processing and listing
9. Assist in preparing materials to be displayed for RBSCL tours particularly horticulture
10. Monitor reading rooms and areas to assure the safety and proper use of rare materials
11. Reserve and monitor the proper use of study carrels
12. Assist in special projects such as inventory and weeding and respacing, particularly for horticultural materials
13. Make recommendations to ensure Library's horticulture collections are relevant to customers' needs and expectations as well as the Library's current service plan
14. Assist in selecting new horticulture titles for RBSCL
15. Update metadata descriptive information
16. Write descriptive pieces/reports on the department’s events and projects for AUC news publication
17. Other duties as required
Requirements:
Minimum Education Requirement(s): BA in a relevant field, BA in Library and Information Science is a plus.
Experience:
1. Specific experience with special collection setting
2. Experience in academic research and translation
3. Training and solid foundation in Photography
4. Training and solid foundation in image editing using Adobe Photoshop
5. Minimum of four years of experience
Skills:
1. Good knowledge of Photoshop
2. Good photography skills
3. Excellent research skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic
Other Abilities:
1. Ability to maintain accurate records and develop reports
2. Ability to pay close attention to detail (detail-oriented)
3. Ability to work in/with a team
