Following THALES’ successful partnership with London Underground (LUL), modernising London’s underground signalling infrastructure on the Jubilee and Northern upgrade project (JNUP), we are delivering the £800million 4 Lines Modernisation Programme (4LM).

THALES is delivering an Automatic Train Control (ATC) system for four of London Underground’s Sub Surface Rail (SSR) lines: District, Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City. The programme has a five year duration and is a comprehensive solution including management, design, development, manufacturing, supply, delivery, construction, installation, integration, testing, commissioning and migration.

We are currently recruiting for an Industrial Engineer to provide Hardware Engineering support to the 4LM programme and bids and project across Ground Transportation Systems in the UK and overseas.

The successful candidate will have the chance to work on some of the largest projects in the UK transport sector, working as a technical specialist, developing technical specifications and designing new materials. The role also covers component engineering, end of life/ obsolescence management, bill of materials management and support to the supply chain function to ensure consistency of equipment and supply for any project across the transportation business unit.

This is a full time, permanent position based in London.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering designs into manufacturable designs or services. Applying Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles throughout the design phase including subcontract manufacturing.
  • Generation of specifications to be used for in house production or for procurement from a supplier/subcontractor for non COTS items
  • Manage publication of engineering Bills of Materials (BOM) – conversion and control of BPMs in the ERP system. Creation of production BOM from Engineering BOM
  • Work with our UK Design Engineers to produce and update procurement specifications
  • Chair design review meetings
  • Ensure throughout the design process that all components meet applicable standards and contractual requirements
  • Interface with System Assurance and Quality Departments to ensure company and project design requirements are met
  • Arrange prototyping, testing and production of components
  • Respond to customer comments and gain approvals
  • Co-ordinate with procurement to ensure the design, development, completion and lead times align with the project schedule’s needs
  • Review of Engineering Change Notes, concession requests, non conformance reports and generation of data to support reliability engineering activities such as FRACAS (Failure Reporting Analysis and Corrective Action System), DRACAS (Data Reporting Analysis and Corrective Action System) or validation of FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) Trees.
  • Development and maintenance of production and test strategies – working closely with Engineering, Installation, and test & Commissioning to ensure we maximise the utilisation of existing equipment and services wherever feasible
  • Conduct design to cost activities to ensure that we utilise the most cost efficient technically fit for purpose solution to increase the competitiveness and efficiency of GTS

Skills, Qualifications And Experience

  • A qualification in Industrial Engineering or a similar discipline
  • Experience in electrical or mechanical hardware design
  • Strong project management skills, with experience in a project delivery environment
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills across multiple projects
  • Highly developed communications skills, as this role works across numerous projects and functions both internally and external to the company
  • Exposure to the rail industry would be an advantage.
  • Understanding of Manufacturing process improvements
  • Experience of conducting design to cost and design for manufacture activities
  • Persuasive personality with the ability to communicate at all levels within the business and with external interfaces in order to achieve team and business goals
  • Knowledge of Improvement Techniques (e.g. DFMA, Value Engineering, Kaizen, 5S, Lean)
