DESCRIPTION

As one of the largest enrollment units for first- and second-year students at The Pennsylvania State University, the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) seeks a positive and dynamic individual to join its academic advising program in a fixed-term academic adviser position. This position is funded with grant monies for one year with the strong possibility of renewal. For this fixed-term position, DUS seeks an individual motivated to help students develop the critical decision-making skills that will enable them to identify meaningful academic goals while also gaining valuable professional experience as an academic adviser. With an advising roster of approximately 250 students, DUS Advisers are expected to monitor academic progress carefully to help provide the foundation for academic success. DUS Advisers also play an integral role in the delivery of academic advising at New Student Orientation. Along with working one-on-one with students, the successful candidate may also be asked to participate in unit-level committees or other initiatives. The Division of Undergraduate Studies is particularly interested in individuals with a broad and comprehensive understanding of contemporary higher education and the role of academic advising in fostering student success. Similarly, we seek an individual that can manage multiple tasks while also being able to foster or initiate creative thinking to further grow our program and help undergraduates reach their academic goals. Review of materials will begin July 19 and will continue until the position is filled. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Expertise in student diversity and experience in college-level academic advising and/or teaching are strongly preferred. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with strong possibility of re-funding.
