Scope of Job:

The Ombudsperson acts as a neutral, independent, informal, and confidential resource to faculty who are seeking assistance to resolve questions and concerns. Facilitate dispute resolution through information means, which includes consulting, negotiation, and mediation. The Faculty Ombudsperson will adhere to the International Ombudsman Association’s (IOA) Standards Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

Description of Duties:

• Creates and ensures a neutral, open and confidential environment in which faculty can communicate freely regarding concerns, questions or complaints.

• Promotes awareness and understanding of the Ombudsperson role to faculty and administration.

• Maintains the privacy of the identity of visitors to the office as well as the content of their conversation.

• Responsible for all budgetary responsibilities of assigned area.

• Participates in one-to-one or group dialogue with faculty to address concerns, questions or complaints regarding academic, research, and employee related issues.

• Acts as liaison between individuals or groups by serving as a consultant, facilitator and informal mediator. Evaluates options and help faculty develop alternative solutions to resolve issues.

• Collaborates with units across the university to assist in the development of solutions and to promote the value and process of conflict resolution.

• Develops and provides presentations and materials for training in topics such as leadership, conflict resolution, change management and communication skills.

• Understands, identifies, and explains relevant University policies and procedures, seeks input from others and makes referrals for formal or administrative options when appropriate.

• Collects de-identified, aggregate data regarding the types of problems faculty face within the organization to identify patterns and trends. Advises executive leadership on issues affecting the faculty community and recommends strategies to prevent future problems.

• Provides an annual report that highlights areas of concern and accomplishments for the year.

• Promotes organization policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

• Develops and participates in a faculty exit interview process.

• Serves on University committees as needed.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in mediation, conflict or dispute resolution, or closely related field from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:

Complete certification by International Ombudsman Association within one year of eligibility.

Preferred: Professional certification from International Ombudsman Association or equivalent organization.

Required Experience:

• (3) Three years professional experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the position, including demonstrated skills in mediation and conflict resolution.

• Knowledge of professional Ombudsperson standards, code of ethics, procedures, and principles and techniques for informal inquires.

• Experience designing and conducting training programs in conflict resolution, communication skills and other related topics.

Preferred Experience:

Prior Ombudsperson experience in institution of higher education.
