We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Environmental Compliance Team to support a variety of environmental protection programs at SLAC. The Environmental Compliance Team manages facility-wide environmental regulatory permits and requirements in the areas of industrial waste water, storm water, and air quality, among others, to ensure on-going compliance with local, California State, and Federal environmental laws and regulations and DOE requirements. The team also works closely with site personnel on a variety of other environmental protection aspects including but not limited to pollution prevention/Zero Waste, NEPA, spill reporting, SPCC, tiered permitting, SARA 313, CalARP, the Environmental Management System, and ecological and cultural resources protection. Work will entail providing support to the environmental compliance team program managers as needed, and may include managing some programs or program aspects.

Specific duties may include but not be limited to identifying and interpreting regulatory requirements, developing/continually improving policy, procedures, training and outreach materials for environmental compliance programs, preparing regulatory report deliverables, collecting, analyzing and managing data, interfacing with regulatory agencies, reviewing project plans and specifications to ensure compliance, partnering with site staff on environmental regulatory matters, conducting assessments and onsite inspections. Occasional field work may be required including soil, sediment, and water sampling.

This position will report to the Leader of the Environmental Compliance Group of the SLAC Environmental Protection Department.

JOB PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, perform basic technical work in a wide range of environmental disciplines to achieve compliance with the university's environmental standards and governmental regulatory requirements.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Participate in the development, im­plementation, and maintenance of programs, systems, and procedures neces­sary to ensure environmental protection.
  • May conduct employee and student training, emergency preparedness activities, and/or assurance programs.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor hazards that could be present in the work area; recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential and ensure compliance.
  • Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and one year experience in environmental field is required. Master’s degree is desirable.

Experience with interpreting and implementing regulatory requirements is strongly preferred, and experience with one or more of the following environmental areas is desirable: storm water compliance, industrial waste water compliance, air quality compliance with BAAQMD, CARB and EPA, zero waste, ecological and cultural resources protection, NEPA, spill reporting , SPCC, tiered permitting, SARA 313, CalARP, and Environmental Management Systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments/evaluations and provide recommendations for risk mitigation or hazard identification.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills.
  • Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles and practices; government environmental, health, and safety requirements and university policies; and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which this background can be applied.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and detail orientation and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform occasional field work as described in the Position Overview.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.
