Job Description:

The Associate Director of Proposal Support Services will advance the research mission of Syracuse University, working closely with the Director of Proposal Support Services and the Vice President for Research, by assisting proposal development activities for new and existing interdisciplinary research clusters, through communication of existing and growing research strengths to external funders, and through intensive grant development work on mid- to large-scale proposals. Major activities include: actively monitoring the federal funding landscape to identify new areas of opportunity; interacting funders to promote Syracuse University and foster relationships between funders and faculty; assisting with the management and analysis of research metrics resources; assisting with managing limited submissions opportunities and internal seed grants; facilitating and providing relevant services for the development of competitive proposal applications; identifying and circulating relevant funding opportunities; assisting with grant development training; designing research news publications and research communications; and facilitating relationships between faculty and relevant institutional offices that support research development. The AD will also work on additional projects as demanded in other areas of research support.

Qualifications:

• PhD in applied, life or physical sciences.

• A minimum 10 years of experience with research development is acceptable for applicants with relevant Master’s degrees.

• A minimum of 5 years of experience working with grant development across multiple disciplines.

• Strong preference for applicants currently working in an academic institution classified as an R1: Research Universities (highest research activity).

Job Specific Qualifications:

• Experience with transdisciplinary proposal development and external engagement (e.g., funding agencies, universities, corporations, national labs) at a research-intensive university.

• Knowledge of extramural funding programs, including expertise in analyzing and applying federal and non-federal regulations and guidelines, as well as comfort with building and maintaining relationships with representatives from funding sources.

• Proposal review experience, such as experience as a federal agency program officer, rotator, or grants development professional.

• Experience with intramural grant programs – design, roll-out, and review and award processes

• Experience facilitating interdisciplinary teams

• Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including expertise in grant writing, editing, small and large training activities

• Experience facilitating parallel complex programs and activities in a timely manner with a high degree of quality.
