Job Description:

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University is seeking an individual to co-teach NEW 300/600 ST: Drone Journalism on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:50 in the Spring 2019 semester (1 credit).

Class meets from April 2-final exams.

Description: This one-credit, five week course provides hands-on experience using unmanned aerial systems (“drones”) for aerial photography and video. Students will also learn how and where to safely fly in U.S. air space as defined by the Federal Aviation Administration, and be prepared to separately take the FAA Section 107 drone pilot test. The course will only prepare students for go through the FAA certification process and is not guarantee of receiving a license from the FAA. Students will also learn about best practices using drones by the journalism industry with a particular emphasis on privacy and ethics.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required, with master’s preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications:

ualified instructors must have experience in traditional photography and videography in journalism or a related communications profession, professional experience flying drones, an FAA Part 107 commercial drone pilot license, and be in good standing with the FAA.
