Position Summary

The Department of Sociology at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks candidates for a tenure-system Assistant Professor position in sociology of health. This position is part of a batch hire of faculty within the College of Social Science to address future challenges of coastal environments. The 9-month academic year position begins on August 16, 2020.
We seek candidates to investigate physical and/or mental health dynamics in coastal communities, in a variety of coastal areas and environments around the world, with preference given to applicants who either have or are willing to develop a research program in the Great Lakes region. Successful candidates will examine drivers of health outcomes and/or disparities over time and/or across geographic areas. Such drivers may include, but are not limited to, changes in physical environment (e.g., erosion, pollution, and natural disasters), built infrastructure (e.g., sanitation, drinking water access, and housing), and/or socioeconomic and psychological factors (e.g., education, occupation, health care, family, and neighborhood).

The Department of Sociology has three signature areas of Environment, Health and Medicine, and Migration. Most faculty in the department perform research and teach courses in one or two of these areas.
