Position Title: Engineer, Design

Reports to: Senior Engineer, Design

Location: Boca Raton, FL

The Design Engineer will be responsible for new product development (NPD) projects for both new and existing products, while working within a cross-functional team. Some travel may be required. This position will:

  • Lead the transformation of Industrial Design concepts into functional and manufacturable products, while following Newell’s Product Development Process
  • Ensure the product meets or exceeds expectations from a cost, timing, and specification standpoint
  • Work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain

Business Acumen – 10%

  • Identifies cost and risks at the component and sub-assembly level to meet defined cost targets.
  • Develops the analysis of how sub-assembly level decisions impact the overall business strategy to facilitate design-for-cost.

Technical Leadership – 10%

  • Provides routine engineering, working autonomously on project teams with little to no guidance from more Senior Engineers to deliver well-engineered products.
  • Reviews relevant competitive products to provide benchmarking and analysis of technical specifications.

Problem Solving – 30%

  • Implements existing technologies on a project level to deliver products.
  • Uses a disciplined approach and the appropriate methodology to analyze and determine the preferred solution to technical challenges.
  • Analyzes test results to provide data for use in solving problems.
  • Develops optimal product test plans to validate design.

Communication – 20%

  • Summarizes complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience to gain alignment.
  • Recommends and presents solutions and opportunities in forums to encourage ideation and technical sharing.
  • Generates questions to validate the understanding of the subject matter to facilitate team member understanding.

Organizational Agility – 10%

  • Participates in cross-functional teams to work seamlessly across disciplines as required to execute product initiatives.
  • Incorporates consumer and market insights to drive innovation and project execution.

Technical Mastery – 20%

  • Contributes to the creation of master, skeleton, and kinematic models with moderately complex surfaces to ensure appropriate design.
  • Understands the parameters and functionality of Moldflow and finite element analysis (FEA) to perform limited analyses.
  • Develops multiple concepts for each project and supports brainstorming activities and the navigation of patent landscape to achieve design targets.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials to ensure designs are specified as best cost.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of manufacturing tolerances and capability to apply six sigma tolerance analyses to basic computer aided design (CAD) assemblies.
  • Uses rapid prototyping to validate design concepts and identifies additional methods to accelerate validation.
  • Applies design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) to improve product concepts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering required
  • 2-5 years of product development experience required
  • 2-5 years of design engineering experience using CAD required (Creo preferred)
  • Demonstrates CAD modeling experience (Creo preferred)
  • Demonstrates exceptional critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrates hands on prototyping/design validation model building
  • Demonstrates strong Static/Dynamic analytical skills
  • Demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously
