The Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at American University of Sharjah seeks a Biology Laboratory Specialist (BLS) who will carry out a variety of laboratory-related activities. These include preparing and organizing experimental set-ups for teaching laboratories; calibration, maintenance and operation of standard laboratory equipment both for student instruction and research; performance of measurements requested by the department; preparation and procurement of materials for classroom demonstrations; inventory of equipment and supplies; safe storage and disposal of biological and chemical materials; and maintenance and culture of different laboratory organisms. The BLS may also be required to assist in undergraduate labs and perform departmental tasks assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor and the Head of Department.
Qualifications Required:
-Bachelor of Science in Biology
-Good communication skills in English
-Three years of experience in a similar position
Job Responsibilities:
As assigned and directed by the Head of Department and under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, the BLS should have the ability to:
-Test experimental procedures ahead of lab sessions
-Prepare solutions and ready equipment for lab sessions
-Ensure the safe storage and handling of chemicals
-Ensure the safe disposal of waste chemicals and biologicals
-Prepare materials for classroom demonstrations
-Calibrate and maintain equipment
-Monitor student attendance and complete necessary sheets for submission to the laboratory instructor
-Ensure compliance with the university’s safety regulations and respond immediately to any breakages or dangerous behavior
-Assist in maintaining inventory records
-Inform laboratory supervisor of requirements for equipment and supplies
-Perform other duties as needed by the department
