AccountantDescriptionThe Accountant position is an integral part of a team that performs all financial accounting functions and supports the financial reporting functions for Southern Power, an SEC registrant. The position will report up within the Southern Power Accounting organization and is located in Atlanta, Georgia.Major Job Responsibilities Include
Perform activities associated with financial accounting for various key areas for Southern Power and its subsidiaries, including monthly journal entries, analysis of financial transactions and results, account reconciliations and other accounting duties as assigned.
Prepare quarterly and annual external audit requests, ensuring timely response and maintenance of good working relationship with the external auditor.
Ensure that all internal controls surrounding responsibilities are adequate and functioning.
Provide management with detailed budget to actual and actual to actual variance explanations.
Provide and assist in obtaining relevant accounting and disclosure information for quarterly SEC filings.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent is required
CPA license (or equivalent) is preferred
Experience
Experience in preparing journal entries and account reconciliations is preferred.
Experience in performing analysis on financial transactions and results is preferred.
Experience with the Oracle Financials, Maximo and PowerPlan applications is preferred.
3 or more years of accounting experience is preferred.
Public accounting experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is required.
Ability to identify and address accounting issues is required.
Knowledge of the utility industry and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) System of Accounts is a plus.
Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance requirements is a plus.
Positive, professional attitude with strong interpersonal and communication skills is required; team player.
Self-directed, proactive and able to handle multiple projects and competing deadlines.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities.
