Summary

As a member of the R&D product development team this engineer will lead efforts to understand current and future needs of our customers and our business, explore and evaluate new technologies and product concepts for meeting those needs, and rapidly demonstrate feasibility of such technologies through rigorous modeling, testing, analysis, prototyping, experimentation, and other risk identification and mitigation activities. Working as a member of the R/D team, this engineer will collaborate and communicate with company management, operations, marketing, supply chain, quality assurance, alliance partners and other departments and vendors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead development of new mechanical technologies/solutions and processes
  • Demonstrate bench, clinical, and commercial feasibility of new mechanical technologies
  • Lead in-depth analysis and evaluation efforts of component/system level device performance challenges necessary to prove cause and provide resolution
  • Design and develop electro-mechanical fixtures/equipment necessary to measure performance attributes or demonstrate assembly methods
  • Design and develop test methods to quantify product/component performance capabilities
  • Capture design solutions using CAD tools and performs appropriate design simulations
  • Maintain relationships with vendors and initiates part orders for prototypes
  • Work closely with all supporting groups and departments
  • Develop test plans, protocols and reports to document concept and feasibility efforts.
  • Measure task/project percentage completion at critical stages and takes appropriate actions as needed to keep tasks/projects on track
  • Independently plan, manage and prioritizes tasks/projects, tracks progress toward overall goals, and provides periodic updates to management
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is required.
  • 8+ years of related industry experience
  • 4+ years of medical device industry experience in a similar role
  • Direct experience and proficiency in electro-mechanical equipment design, fabrication, development, and implementation.
  • Proficiency in process development and capability assessment
  • Proficiency in test method design, development and capability assessment
  • Proficiency with engineering software tools for CAD (SolidWorks preferred), equipment/fixture control (LabView), data analysis (MatLab), and statistics (Excel, JMP, etc.).
  • Ability to run self-directed projects, maintain timelines, transfer technology and execute projects in an R&D environment
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity/uncertainty and a willingness to try new/challenging things.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with equipment/fixture fabrication and machine shop skills
Preferred Qualifications

  • Work history in the medical device industry
  • Mechanical Engineering degree preferred
